DOT street and sidewalk permits for plumbers
If the job opens the street or the sidewalk, the Department of Transportation permit is not optional and it is not the same document as the DOB permit or the DEP tap permit. You can have a legal plumbing filing and a legal water permit and still not be allowed to cut the roadway.
DOT states that a street opening permit is required for work that would compromise the street surface, including street openings, excavations, and other work that may damage the street. DOT says those permits are generally requested by utilities and contractors, including licensed master plumbers. The application asks about the proposed work and whether the street is protected. A protected street changes how the permit is handled. Apply through DOT’s online system at nycstreets.net.
A sidewalk construction permit is the permit for sidewalk repair, sidewalk replacement, or a new sidewalk. Plumbers usually need it when the opening is in the sidewalk, for example at a curb valve or a house connection, or when the sidewalk has to be restored after the cut.
DOT’s highway inspectors check work against the permit stipulations and issue violations when the work does not match. A DOT violation is a different record from a DOB violation. Our violation research and removal page already includes Department of Transportation violations along with DOB and ECB cases.
What we do with the filing
S & M Expediting prepares the street opening or sidewalk permit application and tracks it. We do not open the street, plate the cut, or restore the sidewalk. The plumber, or the contractor the plumber hires for excavation, does that work under the permit.
Send the location, the purpose of the opening (water service, sewer connection, repair), how long you expect the opening to stay, and whether DEP already has a tap, wet connection, or sewer permit in process. If the DOB job is an alteration filed by an engineer or architect, we prepare that application for the design applicant to submit to DOB NOW for review and stay with it through permit and sign-off. The DOT permit still stands on its own.
There is no DOT permits page on this site yet. Live pages that sit next to this work: permit expediting, plumbing contractors, and DOB NOW filings and inspections.
We work in Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, the Bronx, and Staten Island.
